So Time Warner is the first to stream live TV over the internet for their customers…who will watch it? Besides flipping on some news while you’re at work, I can’t see a reason why (if you have TV installed in your house) you would watch live TV on your computer. If you seriously had a problem sharing the TV with other people in your household, you would invest in another television set or a good PVR.
IPTV just looks like a way for DSL providers to get a piece of the television market. Who cares if your TV comes over IP or analog over cable if it looks exactly the same on the majority of TV sets? Video-on-demand is a step in the right direction. Imagine the flexibility of a PVR, but with weeks and weeks of programming to choose from? P2P networks would die overnight if it was relatively affordable. And its only a matter of time until someone comes up with a good model for ITV — Interactive Television.
The real question is: how did Time Warner negotiate the rights with the content providers to air all those shows over the Web? Did the networks finally break-down and accept that their shows are on P2P anyhow? Would they give a web-only "TV station" the same deal?
