A weekend without the TTC in Toronto

By Jonathan + April 27th, 2008

The Toronto Transit Commission was on strike this weekend. Not to get into the politics of it, but they have now been declared an essential service by the Ontario government and directed back to work.

What an example this weekend was of how essential the TTC is for the City of Toronto. I doubted I would see a difference this weekend without the streetcars running, since there’s nowhere near the traffic of a workday. But look at these pictures of King St. West today: gridlock. I was down by BMO Field on Saturday during a soccer/football game, and there were cars parked everywhere!

So the government was definitely right that, for this city, transit is an essential service. Until we get those transporter-pads working, let’s keep those buses running ;)
