So You Think You Can Dance Canada – Season Premiere (liveblog)

  • 8:53 PM 7 minutes to the first season ever of SYTYCD Canada!
  • 8:55 PM To join in the liveblogging, login on ScribbleLive
  • 8:57 PM Mary Murphey was in Toronto back in June filming so I’m sure we’ll see lots of her in the auditions [INSERT OBNOXIOUS LAUGH HERE]
  • 8:57 PM
  • 9:00 PM Here we go! 1st episode of 1st season ever!
  • 9:00 PM They love showing that clip of Mary Murphy saying, “some of the best dancers on the planet are here”
  • 9:02 PM The clip montage at the beginning uses a lot of the music from the famous performances in the American SYTYCD last season. Call out, yo! :)
  • 9:02 PM The boarding passes are on Air Canada. We’re in Canada now, people
  • 9:03 PM Toronto is the first spot for auditions. Leah Miller is doing a good job so far
  • 9:04 PM The judges: Ms. Trey Armstrong, Luther Brown, Mary Murphy. Blake McGrath is doing the bootcamp for the audition finalists
  • 9:06 PM Dwayne (Boneless) Gulston is the first audition. Damn this guy can contort! The ladies must love him ;) Mary said “he’s from another planet…just sick…that’s crazy.” Dwayne gets a ticket right to the finals
  • 9:07 PM Luther Brown’s word is “booth”. Will it be as good as “bunk”? Only time will tell
  • 9:09 PM Natelli Resnick is next (formerly from Israel). A partner dancer wearing a weird leopard-print moo-moo. It’s hotter than it sounds ;) Her dancing is a little tragic. Mary says it’s “pretty good”. They are criticing her face and her bad ankle. 3 yeses though.
  • 9:11 PM The next guy’s, TK Kim,main skill seems to be a rubix cube. Leah doesn’t seem to understand the concept. But damn, he knows his way around a cube. He’s dancing to classical music, hip-hop style….maybe trying to poplock but idunno….Mild applause. Mary = “that was amazing. Holy smokes!” They are giving high praise to everybody so far. The judges liked the classical music. He got a ticket right through to the finals.
  • 9:15 PM Breanne Wong (25/Whitby, ON) is next. Modern style. She’s wearing the typical dancer sweatpant-style ;) Nice kick! Kinda reminds me of Kerrington. All the judges like her: personality, look, dancing. She gets a ticket right through (3rd ticket of the morning)
  • 9:17 PM Miles Faber (21/Toronto) up next poplocking. Luther Brown needs to stop saying “word” in the background the whole time ;) Miles has a nice fedora so that ads a lot. Judges love him too. Mary wonders if she’s being punked because “some of the best dancers in the world are here….I’m moving. I need to get my citizenship up here and start drinking this water.” Miles gets ticket #4!
  • 9:23 PM Jason “Jaguar” Tam (29/Toronto) is up next. OMG! I know this guy! I think he’s from Belleville, Ontario! omg, he sings. Scary. He needs to stop dancing…NOW please. But his bright red shirt really adds a lot. The judges seem to like it (surprise, surprise). Brown: “This is So You Think You Can Dance, not So You Think You Can Wild Out”
  • 9:26 PM Romino D’Ugo is next bring the latin-dance flav’a….mildly. Mary said she kinda fizzled in 2nd 1/2. She acted in “How She Moves”. Got 2 yeses to send her to coerography
  • 9:28 PM Matthew Owen (18) is up next. Lots of posing, not so much dancing. Oh, there’s some twirling now too….and sliding. Very modern I guess. Got a ticket right to the finals!…despite needing stitches for face-diving into the stage.
  • 9:30 PM Tatiana Parker (19/Toronto) house dancer. Trey: “(you’ve got a) bundleload of personality”. 2 yeses to go to choreorgraphy
  • 9:32 PM Manuel Dos Santos: salsa dancer from Angola originally (refugee 4 years ago). He’s got some Michael Jackson going on with his footwork! “I’m salsa….I’m pretty much here to represent all the salsa dancers….Here to say, ‘yah, we can burn this floor’”. Mary doesn’t “dig” his shirt. 3 yeses to choreography
  • 9:37 PM I’m falling asleep a little bit so far. I’ll give it another 20 mins ;)
  • 9:38 PM Graeme Goodall is next. Wow, he’s doing crazy flips in his montage around the city. HC this kid can flip! This kid woke me up! Insane moves in his hiphop/modern routine to Our Lady Peace. He’s definitely the first contestant that made me sit up. Mary: “you’re lacking something through your centre….you go in and out of brillance.” Trey: “absolutely wicked….sometimes it was unbalanced”. They put him through to choreography
  • 9:41 PM Tamina Pollack-Paris is next. HOOOOOOOOOOCH. Kinda doing a hoochie-cheerleader thing. Lots of walking around, not much dancing. Trey: “great package”. Mary: “Do I see a star in terms of technical performance…not yet. But I see a star in your personality.” BANG She gets a ticket to the finals. She can’t even believe it :)
  • 9:43 PM Alyssa Marie James (21/Elmire) contemporary dancer. Very smiley! Don’t know if she’s a great dancer but she can’t help but make you smile. Trey: “boring”, Brown: “take some classes”, Mary: “it’s a yes from me because I’d like to see you do someone elses’ choreography.” 3 yeses to send her to choreography
  • 9:45 PM Jesse Catibog doing the Napolean Dynomite song…but with some serious hiphop moves. Audience likes it. Trey: “I need to see more”, Brown gives him a ticket right to the finals.
  • 9:47 PM Leah is outside watching little kids dancing. Little creepy :)
  • 9:48 PM Scott MacDonald (22/Brantford) modern dance to “We will rock you”. He’s got some pointy toes, must be ballet training. Judges look like they don’t know what to think during performance. Silent afterwords. Mary: “you’re refreshing for me. I don’t know what’s going on up here in Canada but I like it! I like it a lot!….You are magnificant and you deserve to go straight through”
  • 9:54 PM Great dance to “Stand by me” up next. Contemporary. That was great! Great movement. Mary: “terrific”, Trey: “Brillance at its best”, Brown: “you did an amazing job…from the top to the bottom”. Ticket directly to the finals
  • 9:56 PM Sexy Melonie salsa is next. This girl could use a sandwich but it’s all good :) Trey: “dancing was good…getting to great”. Through to choreography
  • 9:57 PM Lisa Auguste: Next dancer is VERY confident….to the point of being scary.Very good contemporary routine. Trey: “I’d be very surprised if you don’t make it very far in this competition”, Mary: “One of my favourite dancers in Toronto” Ticket right through to Toronto
  • 10:00 PM Karl Alba up next. Any relation to Jessica Alba? :D He gets his hiphop influence “from living on the street”.
  • 10:09 PM Osvaldo Sales (21/Toronto) “marches to the beat of his own drum”. Lol Once the music stopped he did all this weird contortionist stuff. Brown: “Very intense with your eyes…like you’re trying to put us into a trance”. Trey: “I would have said yes”. Blake busts in and refuses to let this guy walk. Trying to convince Mary or Brown to say “yes”. Brown caves in and lets Osvaldo through to the choreography
  • 10:12 PM Now it’s time for choreography with Blake. “Blake Bootcamp”. WOW, there’s a lot of people in bootcamp.
  • 10:13 PM Osvaldo didn’t make it past bootcamp to the finals
  • 10:14 PM Nateli Risnick made it through!
  • 10:14 PM Salsa guy, Dos Santos, didn’t make it through
  • 10:15 PM Mary: “you were so close.” Danna Carol: “I can do it…I swear to god”, Mary: “I’m sorry, I hope you come back”
  • 10:15 PM Did Graham Goodall, the flipping-guy get through? Yes!
  • 10:16 PM 27 dancers got through to the finals on Day 1
  • 10:21 PM Day 2 kicks off with 2 latin dancers. Mary just gives a yes to the woman but they both get through to choreography
  • 10:23 PM A real trainwreck up next wearing a Zorro hat. Marcel Martinik. Judges laughing like crazy. LOL Marcel gives the air guns. I don’t think that’s going to help his case. Mary: “Was that dancing? No it wasn’t”
  • 10:28 PM AHHHHHH First Mary scream of the night for the next dancer, Jason. Mary put him on the hot tamalli train and got the first ticket of the day.
  • 10:32 PM Really emotional dancer, Amanda, did it for her dad who passed away last August. awww Mary gives her a hug. Mary: “I didn’t even have to know that to know that you’re a beautiful dancer”. Goes through to choreography “not because (her) father died, but because of her dancing”
  • 10:37 PM This Cheerios ad with the couple shooting Cheerios at each other after a fight is kinda weird
  • 10:38 PM Jarrad Simpson (Montreal) is on now. His sister got through on Day 1. Any dancer that uses “Can’t Touch This” is sure to go through ;) He made it to choreography
  • 10:41 PM Next guy has sacrificed “everything” for dance. If he’s a bad dancer, this is going to be tragic. Shawn Fraser (22). I dunno, he’s alright. Definitely not one of the best today. Trey: “he messed up the choreography”, Mary: “1st 1/2 of that was pretty good….then something just went wrong”. They put him through to choreography. He starts sobbing back-stage.
  • 10:45 PM Caroline Torti (23/Oakville) contemporary. Nice, expressive movement. I like her, nice job! Trey: “benchmark for today”, Brown: “I felt energy, passion…I felt everything”, Mary: “You are a star..very engaging. You have the whole package for me sister”. She gets a ticket right through to the finals. Well deserved, she’s going to be a contender I think!
  • 10:51 PM Leah still holding down the hosting duties so far. I think her voice is less annoying than on MuchMusic :)
  • 10:52 PM Toronto Day 2 choreography is next…
  • 10:52 PM Shawn Fraser made it through!
  • 10:54 PM One of the siblings made it through, one of them was broken up
  • 10:54 PM Amanda who danced for her dead father didn’t make it :(
  • 10:55 PM 43 dancers made it to the finals from Toronto. T.O. represen’ting!
  • 10:59 PM Vancouver and Halifax auditions air this Sunday. Looks like Jean Marc will be judging.
  • 11:00 PM And that’s it for tonight! Hope you enjoyed my liveblog

Both siblings made it, it was the ballroom (salsa?) pair that she made it, he didn’t. Jean Marc Genereux.

Great job! Enjoyed reading this a heck of a lot. I’m in the States, we don’t get it telecast here so I’ll be visiting often. Here’s to a great season of QUALITY dancing with QUALITY performers.

hey jonathan, i was watching an episode tonight that i know was a repeat and i’m not sure which one it is, but seeing as how detailed your blog is, i was wondering if you could help me out. i’m looking for a song that was played on the episode in vancouver and emmanual sandhu was dancing on this one. but the song i am looking for was played during “jessica’s” dance (she’s the one that works with special needs kids and caused one of the judges to cry because his daughter is a special needs kid too). i thought i heard the phrase “i lost myself” and i could’ve swore it was nelly furtado, but i searched and no luck. just wondering if you could help me out. thanks!
