Make SkypeOut calls from your iPhone

It’s already a given that I’ll sell my soul for the first iPhone application to allow me to make SkypeOut calls from my iPhone. I make a lot of long distance calls and I have to run home to a landline because cellphone long-distance plans in Canada are so insanely expensive (if you wonder why I have a landline in the first places, it’s a long story involving my building’s buzzer).

Well, the day has come fring now has an iPhone app that includes Skype integration. It’s definitely Beta, so only try it if you have a strong geek stomach, but it works!

Some quick tips if you’re making SkypeOut calls like me. Make sure to prepend “001″ to all the numbers you call e.g. 001-416-555-1234. Also, there’s no way to make touch-tone sounds during a call, so you can’t use any touch-tone phone service (damn, no ordering pizzas). But give these guys a few more weeks and I’m sure they’ll get it.

Anyhow, another amazing app for the iPhone. Huzzah!

Canadian Leadership Debate Liveblogging Round-up

Last night there was all sorts of liveblogging of the Canadian Leadership Debate in English on ScribbleLive. We had over 5,400 posts from dozens of authors last night, and it was great to see our Wordpress crossposting feature being used all over the place.

The Canadian University Press definitely gets the award for the most people in a single thread liveblogging ever. When the main writer, Carl, lost his wifi connection, the commenters continued to liveblog the event (and drink beer according to their posts) Carl eventually got back online and posted some photos of the event.

For the second night in a row, Maclean’s was liveblogging the debate too. They were using crossposting to send all their updates to their Wordpress.com blog. Looks like all the buzz around their liveblog made them #12 in the Top Blogs today. Congrats, guys!

We had another few great blogs using our embed feature to liveblog including the Western Standard Blog and THIS Magazine.

David Kines resigns from CTV, year after CHUM takeover

The metaverse is buzzing today that David Kines, the Senior Vice President of MuchMusic and MTV Canada at CTVglobemedia resigned today. Kines was the driving-force behind MuchMusic for years, and carried on his role after the 2007 purchase of CHUM Ltd. (the MuchMusic mother-company) by CTV.

More details are still emerging, but needless to say, the face of music television in Canada will certainly change without Kines at its helm.

UPDATE 10/5/2008: Here’s an excerpt from his letter to staff:

I started at The NewMusic almost 25 years ago and it’s been non-stop challenges and fun ever since…It has been a privilege to have worked as part of an amazing team to create, build and nurture some of the most successful and best-loved brands in television and new media. I think it’s great how many ideas have started at CTVglobemedia and branched out into their own companies. It’s really inspiring that CTV appears to let their employees work on their own sites on the side, then lets them quit to pursue the dot-com dream. I’m going to start highlighting some of these companies.

Today, I’d like to profile BlueHaze, a concert community site that spun out of CTV’s MTV Canada group. Founded by Mark Shedletsky in December 2006 while he worked at MTV Canada as the Head of Marketing & Brand Partnerships, BlueHaze has recent been reviewed by TechCrunch and has 6 employees.

I think it’s great that CTV, who owns two online music properties — MuchMusic and MTV Canada — is cool with a little competition from their former employees. In fact, a few of their employees are actually avid users of the site: Ryan Trotman the Director, MuchMusic & MTV Digital (CTV Music & Youth Services) at MuchMusic & MTV, and Mark Swierszcz the Senior Producer at MuchMusic and formerly MTV.

All the best to BlueHaze. Their traffic is certainly taking off

See all the events your Facebook friends are going to

It’s always bugged me that there’s no way in Facebook to see all the (Facebook) events your friends are going to. You can see all the events that you are going to, and your home page shows you a bit of what they are up to today, but there’s no easy way to look beyond that. For example, I’m thinking of having a party on Friday. How busy are my friends? Is anyone going to any good concerts? etc.

Where are my f(acebook)ing friends? (pronounced: “where are my f-ing friends”) is a quick little site I whipped up to do just that. You just login with your Facebook account and it will run through all your friends, compiling a list of all the events they are going to for the next week. It even maps out the events on a Google Map to see what’s happening in your neck of the woods.

Anyhow, it’s definitely still Beta but please give it a try and drop me some comments if you love it, hate it, or anywhere in-between. Now go have fun stalking your friends!

Gimme a break! Bell is charging me $2.80/month for “Touch-Tone service”? Are you guys complete idiots? At least add that amount to the line price. Don’t bullshit me with “Touch-Tone service”, as if a telephone line would be worth anything without that. Jerks.

The only reason I have their stupid phone is so I can use the buzzer in my building. With the amount of Swiss Chalet I order, I would spend all my time running down to let in delivery-guys without it

Props to a sea otter

Every year, I like to give props to a special sea otter out there during Sea Otter Awareness Week. This time, I’m giving final props to Nyac, the famous hand-holding sea otter who passed-away this week. I’ve been going to the Vancouver Aquarium my entire life, and Nyac has always been there floating around on her back, smiling at the cameras. I’ll miss her.
