By popular demand, crossposts and embeds now change sort order

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

We’ve had a lot of interest at ScribbleLive in our new crossposting feature, and a lot of people are also using the more-traditional iframe-embed. It’s been great getting your feedback. One thing that has consistently been asked for is, “can the liveblogs appear newest-to-oldest while an event is live, then switch to oldest-to-newest afterwards?” Generally, everyone seems to agree that that would make it easier for their visitors. Well, who are we to disagree? :D

As of today, the iframe-embed will be sorted newest->oldest during live events, until 30 minutes after your last post. Since some of these events are getting really long, I also introduced pagination in those embeds so they load faster for your users. Your avatars will now show-up too. There’s an example of what they look like below. If you have an embed already installed on your site, it’s been automatically switched over to the new version so you don’t have to do anything.

For crossposted liveblogs, once you connect a liveblog to your site, your entries will appear newest-to-oldest. When your event is over (or almost over) you’ll find a new button in the right bar on scribblelive.com: “Close blog entry.” Clicking that button will reorder your liveblog oldest-to-newest and remove all the ScribbleLive scripts from your page. Basically, clicking that button gets us completely out of your hair ;)

I hope you like the new feature! Happy liveblogging :D

Sorry, brief outage on October 7th *UPDATE*

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Tonight during unprecedented traffic during the 2nd Presidential Debate, we had a brief outage on ScribbleLive. We take our uptime very seriously and immediately engaged priority support when we went offline. Unfortunately, it took longer than ideal to get the site back online and I sincerely apologize.

ScribbleLive is a Beta product and as such, we take events like this as a major learning experience. Based on the event tonight, we immediately made a change that will further enhance our hosting capabilities, and that change is now holding the traffic at levels higher than before the outage.

As we grow, we will continue to work on producing a stable platform, and I hope that you will continue to work with us. Please leave a comment or email us at info@scribblelive.com if you have any comments or questions.

Thank you for your patience tonight and happy liveblogging!
–Jonathan, founder of ScribbleLive

UPDATE: We have identified the cause of the problems last night to be a failing processor in one of our primary servers. We will replace the processor during a brief downtime this Saturday between 4am-8am CST. I will post more details as they emerge.

UPDATE #2: The failing processor has been replaced and, to be extra safe, we also replaced the entire chassis. We’ve been closely monitoring all our systems for the last couple of days and we are confident that the errors are gone. To further show our commitment to being a stable platform you can rely on, we will have a DBA, Network Technician and myself actively monitoring our systems during the Apple event this Tuesday (Oct 14) and the next Presidential debate on Wednesday (Oct 15). Happy liveblogging! :D

Canadian Leadership Debate Liveblogging Round-up

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Last night there was all sorts of liveblogging of the Canadian Leadership Debate in English on ScribbleLive. We had over 5,400 posts from dozens of authors last night, and it was great to see our Wordpress crossposting feature being used all over the place.

The Canadian University Press definitely gets the award for the most people in a single thread liveblogging ever. When the main writer, Carl, lost his wifi connection, the commenters continued to liveblog the event (and drink beer according to their posts) ;) Carl eventually got back online and posted some photos of the event.

For the second night in a row, Maclean’s was liveblogging the debate too. They were using crossposting to send all their updates to their Wordpress.com blog. Looks like all the buzz around their liveblog made them #12 in the Top Blogs today. Congrats, guys!

We had another few great blogs using our embed feature to liveblog including the Western Standard Blog and THIS Magazine.

Great job covering the debate everyone! It was hilarious to watch all your commentary. Please join us again on ScribbleLive for all your wacky, obsessive, liveblogging needs each and every debate…or anything else that’s fun to liveblog ;)

HOWTO: Liveblogging in Wordpress using ScribbleLive

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

With lots of websites starting to use the crossposting feature on ScribbleLive that we unveiled back in August, I thought it would be a good idea to put together a quick demo video. In this screencast, I go over all the steps to get your liveblog crossposting to your Wordpress site without using an iframe or other embed code.

Please feel free to drop in other questions in the comments, and I’d be happy to write you back. Happy liveblogging! :)

Pagination comes to ScribbleLive

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

We asked you to liveblog the Olympics and you responded with some of the longest liveblogs we have ever seen (e.g. liveblog of Olympic opening ceremony). Fair enough :) We don’t want to crimp your style and set limits on how long your liveblogs can be, so today we are introducing pagination. Don’t worry, if you are liveblogging up a storm for your watchers, the experience will still be the (awesome) one it is today. But if your blog gets really long, we’ll start breaking it into separate pages. That means faster loading for your visitors and all the same great liveblogging goodness.

We didn’t want you to miss the new pagination, so we added a new header that will follow you as you scroll down the page. Don’t worry if it’s chasing you; it’s friendly.

Just two more ways we empower you to make the most out of your liveblogs on ScribbleLive! Happy liveblogging!

Lots of new features rolled out on ScribbleLive in advance of the Beijing Olympics

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

At ScribbleLive we’re getting excited about the Beijing Olympics starting this Friday! To get ready, I’ve been coding for couple weeks to add some new features. We now have the tools to make your Olympic liveblogs interactive like never before, and integrate with your site like no one else.

On our Olympics page we are pulling in all the Olympic liveblogs across our entire site, but that’s not all! We now pull in all the Twitter tweets about the olympics too. Sitting on that page, watching the posts fly by is pretty hypnotic :)

We’ve introduced commenting that can be turned on on any live event. Try it out here. You can still create an event for just you and your friends, but if you want the public to be able to participate too they can now post comments into the live stream. If you like what someone is saying and want to invite them to be a full writer, just click the “invite” link next to their name.

As if all that wasn’t enough, we have our new crossposting feature! If you have a Wordpress blog and you want to have everything you liveblog posted there too, just click the crossposting button in the right column of events you create. Forget any embed code; just point us to your blog and we’ll take care of creating a post and keeping it up to date. If people are watching the liveblog on your site, they will even see the real-time updates.

Need more? We are now syndicating every event page in full RSS. If you want to crosspost the content yourself, just pull in the RSS and you can mash it to your heart’s content. You’ll find the link in the header of every page or in your browser’s address bar if you’re in a modern browser.

Oh, and don’t forget…All these features are available on the iPhone and other mobile devices too.

A big thank you goes out to everyone whose tried out ScribbleLive over the past two months and sent us their suggestions or blogged about us. We were listening ;)

Happy liveblogging and have a great Olympics!

Countdown to 2008 Summer Olympic Games!

Liveblogging from iPhone with ScribbleLive

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

What kind of developer would I be if I didn’t have ScribbleLive working on an iPhone now that they’re finally available up here in Canada? :D

Now when you go to www.scribblelive.com on your iPhone, you’ll get a version of the site that’s skinned for the smaller screen. I moved around a few things to make it more efficient, but essentially it works the same way it does in a normal browser. When you watch live events it will auto-update, and all your posts will still appear online in seconds!

There’s lots more iPhone-goodness coming to ScribbleLive soon, so make sure to follow us here or on Twitter. Happy liveblogging! :)
