These days I listen almost exclusively to last.fm radio at work which has been quietly suggesting tracks it thinks I would like for the past few months. Today I was rocking out when I finally looked at the name of the band: Phoenix. I looked them up on my chart and without me even knowing their name, they’ve steadily climbed up to one of my top spots. I literally cannot sit still when I hear ‘Armistice’ come on, and by not sitting still I mean I bop in my chair. My chair doesn’t have a lot of spring-action, so it really is harder than you think. Either way, listen to this track and thank me when you break your chair

My musical taste algorithm

After watching what last.fm selects for me for a few months, I think I’ve almost figured out the algorithm for my personal musical taste. If a band matches any of these criteria, I will probably like them:

The lead singer has a very distinctive voice
They are English (but not from London) and Indie
The lead singer has a beard
They were played on ‘The O.C.’
Their song talks about California or NYC
The music video has crappy animation
The band’s name starts with “The”
They use computer beats (i.e. from Super Mario)
Their lead singer looks like he’s having a seizure when he sings
Their lead singer wears geeky glasses frames

I realize I haven’t blogged what my Last.fm friends already know. I am completely obsessed with Coconut Records – West Coast. I think I’m having O.C. flashbacks combined with Rushmore-style freakout (Jason Schwartzman is the lead singer). The video doesn’t really do anything for me, but I think the song is rapidly becoming the soundtrack to my life. Is it bad when you wake-up singing a song and the men-in-white shoot you up again? Probably. “…I LOVE YOU STANDING ALONE IN A BLACKCOAT. I MISS YOU; I’M GOING BACK HOME TO THE WEST COAST….

Does anyone else pretty-much just have Katy Perry saying “I kissed a girl” thumping in their head at all times? Because I do and I’m thinking that I probably have a tumor. DAMN this song is catchy! I’m q-tipping about 10 times a day and I still can’t get this damn thing out of my head! It’s like the Highlander of brain-sucking-repetitive pop rock, but I can’t stop listening. I love you sickeningly sweet American decadent culture!
